From the moment I was born, I have lived and breathed Oregon State athletics.

My history as an OSU die-hard dates back to my days as an infant, when my mom used to dress me in orange and black and drag me to Gill Coliseum for basketball games. I've attended almost every home football game since my elementary school days, and I even ventured to Honolulu for the 1999 Oahu Bowl and to Tempe for the 2001 Fiesta Bowl.

It is a sport unlike any other in the world. It is a sport that demands the stamina of a soccer midfielder with the mindset of a middle linebacker, a sport in which after bashing heads with an opponent you stand up, shake it off and make friends, it is truly the sport of gentleman.

The Mission Statement of OSU states says, as a university, "We recognize that diversity and excellence go hand-in-hand, enhancing our teaching, scholarship, and service as well as our ability to welcome, respect, and interact with other people."

This sounds good, but what does it mean? How does diversity foster excellence, enhance learning and build community?

Rather than jumping into a conversation about cultural or cognitive diversity, let's think about what diversity means in a more general sense.
