Smoking ban on campus
Dear Editor,
I read your editorial on Nov. 12 ("Ban Resolution is all Smoke and Mirrors") and thought that I may be able to offer a different insight.
I teach sociology not only at UP, but at Portland Community College as well.
The Beacon has previously mentioned that PCC went "smoke free" on Sept.

Rev. Timothy Dolan, archbishop of New York City, recently wrote in his blog, "Anti-Catholicism is the last socially accepted prejudice." I agree. How true!
Countless people accuse Catholics of blindly following oppressive rules of a bygone entity headed by an old man who wears a dress! Others assert that Catholic Christians have wreaked so much harm on humanity and continues to do so.

I was prompted to write this because of an experience I had at an OSU volleyball game a few weekends back. At the game I was having a fun time being a rowdy fan, decked out in body paint and making lots of noise. The band was rowdy as well and would help start chants, which is more than what could be said of some of the other fans.

We encounter symmetry on a regular basis in our daily lives in many different ways, in both the natural and human-made world. Symmetry also possesses the magic power of drawing our attention. Most of us value and enjoy experiencing symmetry both visually and mentally because it conveys a sense of the aesthetic, of balance, beauty, equality, evenness, harmony, neatness, perfection, pleasure and/or simplicity.

Having been in Corvallis for nearly two months now, I feel I'm adjusting somewhat to American culture. I've learned that "chips" aren't french fries, cookies aren't biscuits and that everyone will laugh if you go to the "loo."
I've improved my pathetic attempts at an American accent to occasionally sounding passably Southern Californian (thank you, "Clueless"!), and I'm even trying to drink Keystone Light…
Yet what I can't get excited about is sports.

My letter to the editor ("Concerning Lookers and Gawkers: Back off Fellas" - Nov. 3) was written to catalyze a dialogue on the issue of unwanted male attention.
When we see it as acceptable for men to think with their genitals, conducting one's self as if one's sexual "needs" and desires are at the center of the universe, there is a problem.
