On and off the field, Jim Gilstrap, a former football running backs coach, was a man who worked hard and had a big heart. On July 19, after a battle with intestinal cancer, Gilstrap passed away from medical complications at age 65. His character and personality were admired by everyone he worked with during his coaching career.

The Oregon University System and SEIU are currently in negotiations trying to hammer out a new collective bargaining agreement before the end of summer. SEIU is a worker's union that represents all classified university employees, which include all university employees with the exception of faculty and management positions, and in OSU's case custodial services which is contracted out to a private company.

A recent national survey published by the New England Journal of Medicine found that of 13,500 college students surveyed, almost 45 percent reported being so depressed that they had difficulty functioning, and 94 percent reported feeling overwhelmed by everything they had to do.

The new Earthscope national office at OSU plans to bring a new wave of information and excitement into national parks, museums and classrooms about earth science. Earthscope is an NSF program that works hand-in-hand with the earth science community. It's a national program exploring the structure and evolution of the North American continent.
