Standing in the rain, a group of resident assistants cheered in excitement as they watched dorm rooms catch on fire during their fire safety training. The dorm rooms weren't real rooms; they were mock rooms constructed by University Housing and Dining and Corvallis Fire Department to demonstrate in real time how fast a fire can spread and how it can be extinguished.

Thanks to a newly formed partnership between the College of Veterinary Medicine and the Oregon Humane Society, the fate of thousands of pets lodged in shelters looks a little brighter. "The [OHS] adopts around 9,000 pets every year, and now we expect our adoption rates to go up by 20 percent," said Barbara Baugnon, the marketing and public relations director for OHS.

In the recent national ranking of the 2007 Trojan Sexual Health Report Card, Oregon State has fallen short. Last year, OSU landed in the top five. This year, the university dropped to number 17, still making the top 20 out of 139 ranked colleges and universities.

'Rock the Quad' to feature band Kutless Friday

The Antioch House brings local bands and Kutless to 'Rock
A free concert, sponsored by the Antioch House, will be rockin' the MU Quad with local bands and Kutless. Local bands Automata and In Pursuit Of will be opening for Kutless, a Portland-based Christian-rock band. The Antioch House is a Christian living environment in Corvallis.

Gill Coliseum gets a little work done

Plans are being made for structural to the coliseum have been ongoing
Students may not notice, but Gill Coliseum has slowly been renovated from within. Although no exterior changes have been made to the 58 year-old structure, plans are being made to improve the look of building. "We've done a few cosmetic changes, like refinishing the floors and painting the ceiling," said Steve Fenk, OSU's assistant director of intercollegiate athletics.

Managing thousands of acres of conifer forest is a daunting task for anyone to face, but in an industry dominated by men, female woodland managers have found it difficult to find a voice and get their questions answered. Sara Leiman is receiving a 2007 Regional Oregon Volunteers Award for her efforts to promote confidence in Oregon's women woodland managers through the forestry instruction offered by OSU's extension service.
