Push it real good - OSU athletes, staff love SPC

Sports Performance Center open for two months, becomes more popular every day
Reser is empty and baking in the July sun and Gill Coliseum is so deserted the lights are shut off. Tucked between the two buildings is the two-month old Gill Annex, better known as the Sports Performance Center (SPC), and its staff. "If the building is open, we are here," Bryan Miller, interim strength and conditioning director said.

Brandon Hughes joins another list

n Second team All Pac-10 player joins second preseason list
Oregon State senior cornerback Brandon Hughes was selected recently as one of 40 preseason candidates for the 24th annual Jim Thorpe Award. The award is presented annually to the nation's premier defensive back. Number 36 has played in 36 games as a Beaver and has made 31 starts in the secondary - even though he was recruited as a wide receiver.

Hamilton brightest of All Stars

The American and National League all-star roster was announced over the past weekend with little fanfare. There were some of the same old names - Jeter and Varitek in the AL and Pujols and Jones in the NL. A few newcomers made their way onto the team - Youkilis and Pedroia in the AL and Lincecum and Fukudome in the NL.

Volleyball sets up for another season

Tough summer schedule seems to be paying dividends, team ready for successful season
Oregon State volleyball is no easy task in July. It takes determination - and a good alarm. "I know they are working out hard," coach Terry Liskevych said. "At 6:30 a.m. every morning." The team can't officially practice until August 8. The same day the Olympic Games begin - ironic maybe because Liskevych is a former Olympian - but the team can lift weights and participate in open gym without the coaches.
