As the weather took a turn for the worse, the OSU women's swim team turned a pool into whitewater in front of a packed house at Stevens Natatorium.

The Beavers looked impressive in a 141.5-115.5 victory over Nevada Saturday, taking first place in nine of 14 events.

In the 1,000 yard freestyle, Kristi Kuhlmey finished with a 10:15.57, in front of teammate Danielle Kinney who was timed at 10:34.86, getting the Beavers off to a fantastic start.

Naya Higashijima finished first in both the 500 freestyle and 200 butterfly with times of 5:02.07, and 2:04.08 respectively. Higashijima also finished second in the 200 freestyle.

Birte Steven won both the 100 and 200 yard breaststrokes being clocked at 1:06.80 and 2:16.71 respectively.

Kristin Huston won the 50 freestyle and Christina Kinney took the 100 butterfly for the Beavs.

Oregon State coach Mariusz Podkoscielny was pleased with the turnout of the crowd for the first home meet.

"It's amazing because every year, we get more and more support from the fans," Podkoscielny said. "There is no tougher crowd than Oregon State and it's really nice."

Although the times were a bit slower than the past meet, Podkoscielny was content.

"Times we got today were very satisfactory," Podkoscielny said. "In a dual meet, we focus on beating the person next to you, rather than going for time."

The Beavers finished the day totaling five 1-2 victories, the most miraculous coming in the 100 backstroke.

"It's the first time since I've been here [that] we've gone 1-2 in the backstroke," Podkoscielny said.

Next weekend, the Beavers travel to San Jose State for a double duel meet with the Spartans and Cal.
