Rape isn't focused on a single sex, but it happens with incredible frequency.
Surprisingly, few people know the facts behind rape and sexual assault or how to deal with it. The ASOSU Women's Task Force is hosting a sexual assault awareness program tonight. The event will be held in Milam Auditorium on the OSU campus, from 6-8 p.m..
"The goal is to raise awareness," said Rachel Becker, the event coordinator.
She hopes attendees of the program will become more aware of sexual assault and how it applies to them.
Designed to educate people about what sexual assault is, what to do about it, and how to prevent it, the program will be the first of its kind at OSU.
The Interfraternity Council is acting as a co-sponsor, and for its part ASOSU was very pleased that the IFC chose to assist in such a manner.
In addition to the Women's Task Force, several other groups will be participating. CARDV, Public Safety, Psychological Services and the Peer Theatre Health Group will all be present.
The Peer Theatre group will open the evening with two skits, one a scene between two people portraying different perspectives on rape. The other will be a monologue from the viewpoint of a rape survivor.
An OSP officer is speaking on behalf of public safety to discuss sexual assault from the legal perspective: what sexual assault really means, how it's dealt with, and what the consequences are or can be.
There will be several speakers present, and after the program everyone -- the speakers, officers and actors -- will be around to answer questions from the audience.
Some health and women's studies class professors are offering their students extra credit for attending the event.
"This is an issue that affects all of us, therefore we're hoping to see a great deal of support," Becker said.
