A breast cancer awareness run will take place Saturday, Nov. 16, in honor of Nicole Lindauer, former member of the Naval Reserve Officer Training Corps.

Nicole was diagnosed with breast cancer her freshman year. She took on two jobs in order to pay the medical bills for hospital visits and medication.

Nicole passed away nearly a year and a half ago after undergoing a double mastectomy.

Now, NROTC is supplying the staff for the run. Five upperclassman wanted to raise money for breast cancer research in Nicole Lindauer's name.

The NROTC lost two battalion members the same summer that Nicole passed away. A scholarship was set up in Anton Elmlinger's name, one of the two who died.

"We wanted to set up something to honor Nicole's memory as well," said Christopher Dorsey, member of NROTC and a senior in radiation health physics and history.

Nicole had a huge impact on NROTC because "the very nature of the organization itself makes people rely on each other," Dorsey said.

He said NROTC is a team, and members look to their team for support.

"Nicole had her dreams and she went after them without letting things get in the way," Staff Sgt. Michael Linhares said.

Nicole was a member of the women's rugby team in her two years at OSU and an avid mountain biker.

The NROTC wishes to honor Nicole because her passing was so unfortunate, "and she went at such a young age," Linhares said.

Registration for the race is being held in the Quonset hut on Washington Avenue today.

Registration on Saturday runs from 9:30 to 10:30 a.m. in the Reser Stadium parking lot facing Western Blvd.

The 5K run and 1K walk will start at 11 a.m. There will be eight different race brackets according to age and sex.

There will be first, second and third place prizes donated by organizations in the Corvallis community. Raffle prizes will be awarded after the finishing of the race.

While this is the first year of the Nicole Lindauer Breast Cancer Awareness Run, Linhares said, NROTC hopes for it to become an annual event.
