Live music at microbrew fest fundraiser

On Saturday, May 15, from 3--9 p.m., the Heart of the Valley Homebrewers will be holding their annual Homebrew and Microbrew Festival. Proceeds will benefit Linn Benton Food Share and S.M.A.R.T. (Start Making A Reader Today).

The microbrew festival will feature live music from three bands -- Toad in the Hole, Bush Pilots and Los Mex Pistols.

Admission to the event, $8, includes a souvenir beer glass and 2 samples. Each additional sampling is $1. With twenty-four beers on tap, four bands, food vendors, informational booths and a raffle, the microbrew festival is sure to be a great success. This year's event marks the 22nd Oregon Homebrew Festival Competition, as well as the second year for the microbrew festival at the Benton County Fairgrounds.

German students perform with OSU Jazz Band

The Max Planck High School Big Band from Schorndorf, Germany, will team up with the OSU Jazz Band in a free evening performance on Wednesday, May 19, at 7:30 p.m. in the Memorial Union Lounge on the Oregon State University campus.

The Max Planck Gymnasium (MPG) Big Band is directed by Martin Dreschler, who received an M.A. in interdisciplinary studies (music and geography) from OSU in 1982. Dreschler formed the band in 1998, after he became music teacher at the Max Planck Gymnasium (high school.) The band consists of 25 musicians, ranging in age from 13 to 19, performing on trumpets, saxophones, trombones, vocals and percussion. The band has performed at various festivals in Germany and England, as well as the German "Weindorf Festival" in Tuscaloosa, Ala.

The OSU Jazz Band is directed by Ben Lawson, a graduate student in music education, who has directed the ensemble for two years. Last year, Lawson was the band and choir director at Inavale Elementary and Zion Lutheran schools in Corvallis.

The two groups will perform a variety of big band jazz classics.

Monsters of Metal at Platinum

This Saturday Corvallis' Platinum Club will host the Monsters of Metal concert.This hard rocking show features Knockout John, Sullen and Eugene upstarts The Courtesy Clerks. Admission to the 8:30 p.m. concert is $6 at the door. Platinum Club is located at 126 S.W. Third St. downtown. Don't miss it!
