Senate to hear MU food resolution
Barometer Staff Report
The OSU Undergraduate Senate will vote to hear a resolution concerning the Memorial Union food policy tonight at 7 p.m. in MU 109.
The resolution acts to resurface an issue the senate looked at last year. Currently, the Memorial Union does not allow outside food to be served at events held on MU property. The resolution requests that the MU open its doors to allow event planners to allow outside catering and food service. Student supporters say it would allow cultural centers and other groups to have more control over their menus and would bring new events to the MU.
"In actuality, the resolution is nothing more than a formal 'please' to the MU," explained Jonathan Schmierer, undergraduate senator for the College of Business and sponsor of the resolution. "The MU governs themselves, and rightfully so. But opening the food policy up would really open doors for events on campus."
"I think that the senate will vote to hear the resolution and that it will pass through fairly easily," said Ellyn Canfield, undergraduate senate chair.
"The resolution is in no way binding with the MU, it is just a suggestion. It is something that would help us open communication with the MU," Canfield said.
Canfield expects the MU might be surprised the issue is resurfacing this year, as the issue was seemingly put to rest last year.
"Last year the MU felt the senate was going behind their back to make changes in policy. This year it is different. We want to work with the MU to reach a decision," Canfield explained.
The MU has concerns about health and insurance policies and these issues are briefly outlined by the resolution.
The MU could not be reached for comment by press time.
This resolution is the first legislation seen by the senate this term and Canfield expects to see more in the future.
"We are trying to work with this soon so that we can concentrate on the influx of legislation that we will see soon," Canfield said.
