ASOSU undergrad senate looks at parking
Barometer Staff Report
The ASOSU Undergraduate Senate recently passed two resolutions concerning the operations of Transit and Parking Services.
Currently, when a student receives a parking ticket, they have a limited amount of time to pay the ticket. If this ticket is not paid, the student's account will be billed. This stipulation is listed nowhere on the ticket.
"We believe this is a violation of privacy and student records," said Ellyn Canfield, the undergraduate senate chair.
The second resolution passed states that students should be able to appeal violations before paying. The appeal process has long been under debate by students who claim that the process is not legal.
The resolutions are not binding and still have not been formally proposed to OSU.
"A resolution is a formal suggestion on behalf of the student body," Canfield said. "It is looking very positive right now."
Pam Derrickson, parking services office specialist, was not quite as optimistic.
"It's not just students who get parking tickets," Derrickson said. "Staff, faculty and visitors received them also."
Derrickson is worried that people who are not students may not understand why this clause is stated on their ticket.
"The tickets are geared toward illegal parking," she said. "However, we can discuss it when the issue is brought to us."
The second resolution is going to need a little more work.
"We cannot change the ticket policy," Derrickson said. "The undergraduate senate must take the resolution to the legal aid. Then it has to be approved by the vice president."
When all of these processes are finished the resolution must be taken to Salem and pass through the state legislature.
"These are legal documents," Derrickson said. "We cannot just change them."
