The OSU women's golf team started off their 2006 season with a fourth place finish at the Salbasgeon Suites Invitational, held at Trysting Tree Golf Course last Monday and Tuesday. The Beaver women opened the fall season by hosting 16 colleges in their annual invitational tournament.
"It always feels good to play at home because we had so many people out here watching," senior Jillian Ferrante said. "I think that's the most people I've seen coming in on 18 [holes] so that's exciting."
OSU finished the three-round tournament with 899 strokes, good enough for fourth place. The Beavers were 21 strokes back of the first place University of Denver (878). Stephanie Sherlock led the Pioneers with a 214 (71-71-72) and finished as the overall leader for the invite.
"For the first event of the year I think it went really well," head coach Rise Lakowske said. "We had a lot of birdies and a lot of pars."
The Beavers were lead by Ferrante, who despite a couple of poor holes finished her third round shooting a 73, putting her into a tie for sixth place. Ferrante's career best finish was good for a four-over-par 220 after three rounds.
"Jillian is very consistent and is a fighter," Lakowske said. "She had a triple and it motivated her. I expect low numbers from her this year."
"I practiced a lot this summer," Ferrante added. "It's good to see your hard work pay off and [that] makes you want to practice more."
Oregon State's women will use this tournament as a way to see where they are mentally and physically as they ready themselves for their next tournament.
The Beavers welcomed two newcomers to their team as they took to the links. Freshman Lauren Archer made her collegiate debut by recording the most birdies in the tournament with 13. Archer, playing Trysting Tree for the first time in a tournament setting, finished tied for 14th individually with a 224.
"Lauren played great," Lakowske said. "Monday she birdied five of the last seven holes coming in. She is well disciplined, she's smart, she has good course management skills, and she hits the ball a long ways. She's really got a good future."
OSU looks to continue the success of last season's team that reached the regionals of the NCAA Championships. This year's team returns all but one golfer, and adds Archer and junior transfer Pony Leung. In her OSU debut, Leung tied for 78th place.
"We are five deep, which we haven't had in along time," Lakowske said. "Everyone on this team can contribute low scores all year."
The women's next tournament is the Heather Farr Memorial in Colorado on Oct. 2 and 3.
