AUBURN, Wash. - The Oregon State men's golf started the third round of play at the Opus NW Husky Invitational - hosted by Washington - in fourth place, but could not hold its standing, falling to eighth place in Tuesday's final round of play.
"I'm not sure what happened out there. Everybody struggled today," head coach Brian Watts said. "When we get back to Corvallis, we're going to have to regroup, look at our stats, and figure out what went wrong. We made some mistakes that cost us a lot of penalty strokes."
The Beavers finished the tournament with a team score 891 (292/292/307) at the par-72 Washington National Golf Club. UCLA won the tournament with a 9-under-par 855 (280/287/288).
James Allenby led the team with a 1-over-par 217 (71/72/74) for the tournament. Allenby finished in a tie for 17th. Diego Velasquez finished tied for 23rd with a 220 (74/71/75). Tied for 28th was Christian Green, scoring a 221 (70/73/78). Alex Williams tied for 54th with 233 (77/76/80). Mitch Gillis shot a 234 (77/77/80) and finished tied for 57th.
"James played exceptionally well today, but couldn't sink any putts," Watts said. "He hit the ball great, giving himself a lot of birdie opportunities, but unfortunately couldn't get anything to fall. We had some individuals who played solid so we're going to throw everybody in the mix when we get back and see what happens. It was a very disappointing finish and we have a lot of work to do going into next week. "
Washington's John Wise won the tournament with a 7-under-par 209 (68/70/71).
In other men's golf news, Gillis will be featured in this weeks edition of the magazine Sports Illustrated as part of the "Faces of the Crowd" section. Gillis had a phenomenal summer, winning three prestigious amateur titles.
