FAIRFAX, Calif. - Looks like all those summer tournaments Mitch Gillis played in are paying off.
Gillis, a senior on the OSU men's golf team who won three amateur tournaments over the summer, finished tied for third place at the Alister MacKenzie Invitational, leading the Beavers to a third-place team finish on Tuesday.
Led by two top-5 individual finishes, the Oregon State men's golf team finished the Alister MacKenzie Invitational in third place on Tuesday.
The tournament - hosted by Cal - was one for the record books for the Beavers, as they tied for the third-lowest team single-round score in Oregon State history with a 7-under-par 277 in the second round. Their tournament total of 4-under-par 848 (284-277-287) ties for the fourth-lowest team three-round score. California won the tournament at the par-71 Meadow Club course with a score of 826 (268-275-283).
"The golf course played 4 or 5 shots tougher today with the wind and the pin placements," coach Brian Watts said. "We thought going out that even-par would be a good number today. The guys hung in there and had another good day of ball striking and putted much better today. As a result, we scored well."
Gillis tied for third along with fellow Beaver Diego Velasquez with three round totals of 5-under-par 208. Both scores tie the sixth-lowest three-round individual scores in OSU history. Gillis' (73-66-69) second-round 66 ties for fifth-lowest single round score in school history. Velasquez (68-69-71) finished the final round with an even-par 71. James Allenby finished with 216 (69-73-74), which placed him in a tie for 25th. Alex Williams tied for 52nd with 221 (74-74-73). Jeremiah Oliver finished tied for 65th with 224 (76-69-79).
Michael Wilson of California was the lowest individual with a 202 (65-67-70).
"Diego and Mitch both played great the whole tournament - very consistent, solid golf, all three rounds," Watts said. "With a few more putts yesterday, I think both of them could have competed for winning it outright. We have a week off, so the guys can get back to class, and we'll regroup and get ready for Bandon Dunes."
The Beavers return to Oregon for a week off before heading to Bandon Dunes, Ore., to participate in the Pac-10/Big-10 Challenge at the Pacific Dunes Golf Course on Oct. 23-24.
