Friday night's rain washed away the OSU men's soccer team's hopes for their first Pacific-10 victory.
In the final game of the season, the Beavers (5-12-2, 0-9-1 Pac-10) were defeated by Washington 2-1 in overtime. It was OSU's second loss to UW (12-6-1, 4-5-1 Pac-10) this year, as the Huskies beat the Beavers 3-1 in Seattle earlier this season.
"We all came out to play last game playing for pride more than anything," defender Matt Bowman said. "I think we all brought it, you could see it on the field and you could see it until the last whistle and the last shot."
The first half of the game was played in a downpour of rain, and the pitch was wet and slick after previously being played on by the women's team. The scoreless first half contained only two shots by each team as both struggled with the field conditions. Players slipped and fell throughout the game, so much so that UW keeper Rylan Hawkins needed to change his jersey at halftime.
"It was a little slippery," forward Bryan Jordan said. "On touches, the ball sped up a little bit. But we are used to it, playing in Oregon."
The game became very physical as the rival teams battled it out on the pitch. Early in the game, OSU midfielder Collin Foster slide tackled a Husky player, and received a yellow card after making hard contact with the Husky's ankle.
OSU had an early scoring opportunity as midfielder Mason Webb missed a shot wide near the end of the period. A little later in the period, Bowman received a yellow card.
In the second half the Beavers were outshot by the Huskies 9-5. Senior forward Robbie Findley took a strong shot on goal that was turned away by Hawkins, while Jordan missed a header off a corner kick.
Later, a Husky defender took down an OSU attack inside the penalty box causing a penalty shot. Findley placed the penalty shot low in the right corner as Hawkins dove left. Findley and his teammates enjoyed the mud as they slid on their stomachs to celebrate.
"This was the first game we got the chance to put the first goal in and that gave us a lot of energy," Jordan said.
With three minutes left in the game and a 1-0 lead, the Beavers surrendered a goal to UW defender Ty Harden.
"That typifies our season right there," head coach Dana Taylor said. "You do need a little bit of good fortune along the way and it seems every break this season went the other way. That's the way soccer is."
Overtime looked to be scoreless before OSU defender Daniel Leach was called for a penalty on the far side of the penalty box, setting up a Husky penalty shot. Kevin Forrest, who leads the Pac-10 in goals scored, put the ball to the left side of the net past Beaver keeper Jason Mariner, who went the opposite way.
"I thought the guys battled hard," Taylor said. "When they realized they weren't in the NCAA Tournament they could have gone the other way. They showed true character and that is what Oregon State is about."
