Oregon State University play-by-play announcer Mike Parker has been named the 2006 Oregon Sportscaster of the Year for the second consecutive year and fourth time in his career, the National Sportscasters and Sportswriters Association has announced. The 48-year-old also won the award in 1999, 2002 and 2005.
Parker is in his eighth year calling action for the football, men's basketball and baseball programs. He also hosts Beaver Sports Talk and serves as the master of ceremonies for other OSU-related events. In addition, Parker co-hosts a daily sports talk show on KEJO (1340 AM) in the mid-Willamette Valley.
"I'm really overwhelmed by the honor, and for the second straight year is unbelievable," Parker said. "I've had the privilege of calling some of the greatest moments in the history of OSU athletics, and I think an award like this is a function of being involved with such great events ... the national championship in baseball, the amazing football season. It's a thrill to be a part of all this, and I'm looking forward to many more highlights in the future."
Parker is a 1982 graduate of the University of Oregon. His broadcasting career also includes play-by-play duties at the high school level, minor league baseball duties with the Eugene Emeralds and Portland Beavers and the Oregon women's basketball program. Parker has also had stints as a radio talk show host on Portland radio stations KFXX and KEX.
