More oversight needed
We had a really bad feeling this Saturday we when walked outside to our car to find the rear passenger window busted only hours after it was parked. Of course multiple items of value were taken including snowboards and athletic gear. The situation is especially hard on us because we are over 2,000 miles away from home. This was after having our bikes stolen in September while they were locked up just outside of our dorm entrance. These experiences really worry us about the community as a whole. Our belief is that in a small town, people should be watching out for one another.
For example, our car had been sitting in an area where people had been walking past all morning while going over to the match at Gill. It was obvious that someone had broken in with the shards of glass on the sidewalk and street. We were saddened to think that no one was willing to call the police department to report the incident. In our hometown we feel that everyone looks out for one another. We didn't have to worry about theft. Our previous apartment was located by all of the bars, and many times we left our door unlocked with the knowledge that our fellow peers were around to keep an eye out for invaders.
We believe that the problem with on-campus theft should be addressed. The fact that people are aware that over $250,000 in bikes were stolen in the area last year and that police identified that car break-ins are a problem means that town and campus should take action to protect its students. Simple solutions to theft would include security cameras in parking areas, guards to check lots, and an easy number that students and residents could use to report any suspicious activity. We hope that the community will make changes to better care for its college campus.
