The winter term blood drive kicks off today at 11 a.m., and according to organizers, the Pacific Northwest's blood supply is running dry.

"We are not in a good situation if a catastrophe occurs," said Scott Waggoner, a graduate student in geography and a coordinator for the Blood Drive Association. "Because of the ice and snow storm, the Red Cross lost about 1,000 units of blood due to cancelled blood drives."

"Currently the Red Cross has a day supply of O positive and O negative blood," said Erika McQuillen, a sophomore in civil engineering and the president of the OSU Blood Drive Association. "OSU is the best drive that can alleviate that. We are asking everyone's support either by donation or volunteering or spreading the word."

Currently OSU has the largest blood drive in the Northwest, bringing in close to 800 donations and 1,000 participants. McQuillen said their goal is to have the largest amount of participates that they've ever had. "It is necessary for our region," she said.

Before going to donate, donors should eat iron-enriched foods such as bagels, tuna and raisins. For a larger list of iron-enriched foods, visit the Red Cross Web site at givelife.org. The Web site also gives other information about donating.

The OSU Blood Drive Association is also asking for personal stories.

"We are looking for people who have received blood products and wouldn't mind publicizing their stories to the campus," McQuillen said. "It would be very helpful to the blood drive."

Along with donators, the OSU Blood Drive Association is also always looking for volunteers to help with the drive.

"We usually have a full schedule by the time we start the drive," said Emilee Jansen, a senior in nutrition and food management and the volunteer recruitment director. "However, we are always looking for volunteers before the drive starts. People who are interested can go to our Web site."

The blood drive will be running today through Thursday from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. every day. "Monday is our slowest day and Thursday is our busiest day," Waggoner said.
