Students are taking their case to the state Capitol building in Salem on Thursday in a rally focused on post-secondary education.
"We are talking about Oregonians," said Courtney Sproule, communications director for the Oregon Students Association. "People that will be living and working here."
According to Oregon Students of Color Coalition Field Organizer, Brenda Sifuentez, more than 1,000 university students will be turning out by the bus-load to hear and make speeches for the case of higher education.
"Unlike our grandparents, we can't work our way through college anymore," Sproule said.
The rally will start at noon and end near 1 p.m.. Students interested in attending can sign up for a ride with the ASOSU State Affairs Task Force.
"We are educating less Oregonians at a time when having an educated citizenry is more important than ever to our state's future," said OSA Board Member and PSU student Patrick Beisell, in a prepared release from OSA. "Students want to send the message loud and clear to our legislators: reinvest in post-secondary education to make Oregon stronger."
Speakers will include Gov. Ted Kulongoski, Rep. Gene Whisnant (R-Sunriver), Rep. Larry Galizio (D-Tigard), university and community college students, faculty from Western Oregon University and staff from Portland State University.
OSA will also be holding "Lobby Day," where OSA members will meet with Oregon legislators.
OSU students can sign up for transportation to Lobby Day in Student Involvement. The sign-ups are located in front of the State Affairs Task Force desk. The busses will meet at 10 a.m. in front of Gill Coliseum Thursday and return by 2:30 p.m.
