Southside Hounds bring 'phunky' sound

Issue date: 2/23/07 Section: Diversions
Have you ever heard of "supergrovalistic sophistaphunk?"
This form of music, according to The Southside Hounds, is "deep funk roots with a reggae and hip-hop twist."
The Southside Hounds have been together since 1999. The band has five permanent members and a big "extended family." The five members consist of Rigel Woodside on drums, Luke Thompson on guitar, Jefe Contreras on bass, Jordan Lucus on vocals and percussion and Thomas MacKay on keyboards. Their extended family consists of a horn section, lead by Ed Propst on the trombone. "We love to have new people come and jam with us on stage at shows," said singer Lucus.
Being in a band "is like a having your own club," said Lucus. "It's a way to get away from significant others and hang out with my best friends," Lucus went on to say. Contreras referred to being in a band as "a brotherhood."
Besides creating brotherhood, The Southside Hounds are trying to be generational innovators. "We want to authentic, and reflect our own emotional thoughts," said the band members.
They feel that our generation likes to see more than one thing.
"We as a generation are increasingly influenced by the media, Internet, and we feel that bands should break through that and become individualized," Thompson said.
This band is individualized so much to the point that they made up their own genre of music as well as having one goal in mind to create a record label in which encourages individuality.
"We want bands to see that they be successful and still be individuals," said Lucus. The band talked about how groups trying to get signed don't have to go to a big record label and change their image. To keep their individuality the band also is their own manager.
"We book all of our own gigs," Contreras said.
"Everything is within our fingertips and we have all of the control," Thompson said.
The Southside Hounds have done a great job booking their gigs, to expand their fan base. They completed a 14-gig tour playing in different parts of Oregon and other states including Colorado. They also have played at Mt. Bachelor for local and national snowboard and ski competitions. Lastly the band is gearing up for an all Oregon tour and are ready to take on the Corvallis crowd again.
If you are looking for a highly energized, adlib, guest appearing, fun filled concert then check out their shows on March 3rd at Squirrels and April 13th at the Peacock.
