A day before turning 21, Kunz gave a performance worth celebrating, while junior Jordan Lennerton provided him a birthday present by hitting a walk-off home run in the 11th inning on Saturday. With a 9-8 victory, the Beavers took two of three from the Trojans and are now 2-4 in conference play.
"I was really focused and really wanting to get that win," Kunz said. "I wasn't going to let anyone else take it from me. I was working my butt off. I was going to come out until they had to drag me off that mound. I was just very glad to end that game the good way."
With Oregon State and Southern Cal's three-game series tied at one a piece, Saturday's match-up was of great importance as both teams fought to stay out of the Pac-10 cellar. All of the dramatics were saved up for the final game of the series in an extra-inning affair.
It was all OSU through four innings, as catcher Mitch Canham drove in the game's first two runs with a single to left-center field. With centerfielder Chris Hopkins on third and Canham on first, the Beavers executed a double steal to score the third run.
The Beavers continued to tack on runs as Canham knocked in Oregon State's fifth run of the game. After a run in the fifth inning, the Trojan hitters took advantage of starting pitcher Daniel Turpen's control problems in the sixth.
After two quick outs, Turpen hit Trojan catcher Robert Stock before giving up a single, a walk and another hit batter, which scored a Trojan run. That was it for Turpen, as the Beavers went with lefty Anton Maxwell. He started where Turpen left off by hitting the first batter he faced and walking in another run. Hector Estrella of USC got the better of Maxwell in the next at-bat, taking him deep for a grand slam and giving the Trojans a 7-5 lead.
