For four years, Tami Battles have taken part in Relay for Life. This year, with her grandmother's cancer diagnosis, Battles is more committed to the cause.

"I decided to get more involved and become the team captain," said Battles, a senior in nutrition and food management. "Plus it's a lot of fun."

Battles is the captain of The Red Hot Chi O's, a sorority which is participating in Relay for Life along with many other student groups.

Relay for Life isn't just a walk around a track. It's a time of remembrance and celebration. The event inspires hope, for those who have been touched by cancer, and for a cure. Victims of the disease can find support from the event, and talk to people who share their illness.

"We also celebrate life, friendship and a chance to work together toward a cancer-free future," said the Relay for Life Web site.

Relay for Life raises money to benefit the American Cancer Society. Teams of participants take turns walking around a track.

During the event, there is a survivors lap to honor those who are currently fighting cancer, and a luminary ceremony to commemorate those whose lives were lost.

Different groups from all of campus have formed teams and taking place in the event. Participating teams come from residence halls, student organizations, various sororities and fraternities or simply a group of friends. Currently 95 teams are participating in the event.

Katrina Spooner, a senior in business administration and the director of finance for the MUPC, is a member of the MU Relay for Life team, which boasts 14 members.

"It's a really good cause, and it shows support for a place where we all work," Spooner said. Her team's goal is to collect $500 for the American Cancer Society.

Battles' team has 21 members and their goal was to collect $1,000, so far they have raised a total amount of $2,000.

Her team has raised money by e-mailing friends and family. They also raised money by auctioning off gift baskets at the sorority's Mom's Weekend auction. The event will take place in the MU Quad starting at 6 p.m. to 9 a.m. on Saturday. Students can register to volunteer at www.osurelay.com or attend to support those who are walking. The cost of participation is $10 .
