Sexual assault and harassment has plagued many universities around the nation with several acts of violence happening every week.
Many universities have set up programs and information on how to prevent such acts.
According to a press release, OSU is a leading institution in this regard with its new training Web site that describes ways to prevent and address these kinds of issues.
The training Web site will consist of a variety of scenarios of sexual harassment, offering analysis for each situation.
OSU's Office of Affirmative Action and Equal Opportunity (OAAEO) has worked together with Media Services and several volunteers to develop a comprehensive sexual harassment prevention training program.
This training Web site was a response to a 2006 study by the American Association of University Women (AAUW) that found that nearly two thirds of college students experience sexual harassment.
"A guided analysis accompanies each scenario to help students identify appropriate responses to ending sexual harassment at OSU. This was an exciting project for Media Services," said John Greydanus, Director of Media Services, in a press release.
Students have mixed emotions as to how effective such a Web site will be at Oregon State University .
"I think that this Web site may not be that effective because of society's views on sexual harassment and gender discrimination," said Larry Kennedy, a senior in the College of Business. "There are parties at OSU that openly degrade women and put them at a greater risk of sexual assault and harassment."
Baylor Shaw, a senior in exercise sports science, sees OSU's new training site as being beneficial to students.
"I think this Web site provides a way for people who need help dealing with sexual harassment deal with it better," Shaw said.
