Friday, May 25, 2007 --

Larry Roper, vice provost for student affairs at OSU, has been named interim dean of the College of Liberal Arts, succeeding retiring dean Kay Shaffer, the university announced Friday afternoon. He will continue in his role as vice provost.

Roper, who has headed the student affairs division at OSU since 1995, begins his interim post July 1, and is expected to stay on board during the 2007-08 academic year, a university press release said.

In addition to his senior administration role, Roper has a faculty appointment in the ethnic studies department and also teaches in the community college leadership program and the college student services administration program.

In an e-mail to the division of student affairs, Roper said that while the new appointment will "represent a dramatic change in how I spend my time, I want to affirm I am fully committed to our organization and my role in Student Affairs." He said while he is playing the dual roles, the division will rely on "shared leadership."

In the e-mail, Roper said he would return full time to his provost job following his interim appointment.

"As I try to make sense of my responsibilities I will do all I can to be thoughtful about how I can bring the greatest value possible to Student Affairs and the College of Liberal Arts," Roper said.

Shaffer announced her planned retirement in October, prompting a national search for a replacement. However, the search was suspended in April by Sabah Randhawa, OSU provost and vice president.

The decision to suspend the search prompted some criticism from within the college.

Randhawa said at the time that budgeting concerns at the state Capitol influenced the decision to halt the search.
