"The triangular foss, helix, anti-helix, tragus and anti-tragus are names of the visible external parts of what organ of perception?" asked LeeAnn Baker, University Honors College faculty member. The correct answer is the ear.
This is just a taste of what kind of questions the contestants in the college version of The High Five Challenge needed to answer. In the contest, OSU was matched up against UO.
OSU's High Five Challenge team was made up five participants- David McCandless, Ryan Bonaker, Nathan White, Jackie Sleeper and Brandon Wheeler. The team responded to questions from 10 categories. The two teams met for the High Five Challenge in Portland on April 2 at the Oregon Public Broadcasting station.
The team met once a week starting fall term to prepare for competitions.
"My freshman year the Honors College sent out an e-mail about it and I responded. Plus, I really like trivia and I'm a dork like that," Sleepers said.
Team members were chosen based on practice attendances. Although the University Honors College coaches the team, anyone outside the University Honors College can apply. The OSU team prepared for The High Five Challenge by playing trivia games.
"Trivial Pursuit was helpful because the categories can really be out of left field sometimes," Sleepers said.
Another contestant in the challenge was OSU grad student McCandless, who is graduating this term with a master's degree in college student services administration.
"We read trivia books and met once a week for about an hour to prepare," McCandless said.
The competition between OSU and UO in The High Five Challenge took place in April but will be airing on OPB this Sunday. McNary Hall will be hosting a viewing party in the main lounge where most of the OSU contestants, friends and faculty from the University Honors College will be in attendance celebrating the victory.
"It was pretty low pressure and I definitely enjoyed the experience," McCandless said.
"It's good publicity for the Honors College and plus it is a fun extra-curricular activity not a lot of people get to do and it was a stress reliever for me because I got to set aside time to do something I actually enjoy," Sleeper said. "It's open to anybody, people should try out, it's nice to have a little competition."
The televised High Five Challenge wasn't the OSU team's first victory. The College Bowl Challenge was another opportunity for the team to compete. MUPC hosted a trivia contest between colleges from around the region as well.
"It's a tradition for us to field a team from OSU, we've done it now for many years," Baker said.
The viewing of the High Five Challenge on OPB is located McNary Hall on June 10 at noon.
