From Corvallis to New York

Three months in New York City. My dream to become something like a local in this crazy city came true this summer when I snagged an internship at Glamour magazine in the fashion closet.
Honestly, I had no idea what I was getting myself into as an intern. Through working at the Barometer and being a merchandising major, all I knew I wanted was to work toward a career in fashion journalism. Due to the requirements of my major and my general decision to jump into whatever I could get, I applied to the fashion department of several magazines in New York. I was offered internships at Jane magazine and at Glamour, and thankfully I chose the latter. Jane folded in early July, which was, unfortunately, also the first day of work for our wonderful former columnist, Krisja Lorenson. Don't worry about her, though; she bounced back and got internships at Interview magazine and the Jessup showroom. But I digress.
It really feels impossible to explain my amazing summer in a small story here. I've gone to some incredible places and met some great friends. My summer of work began right away, as I had the joy of having a Friday morning final at OSU before flying out to NY only to start work that Monday. As it turns out, despite some "Devil Wears Prada" fears, Glamour is a fantastic place to work. The interns all look out for each other, and everyone else - the fashion assistants, editors - are great people too. I worked with the assistant with the major American market, so this job involves two interns because of the amount of returns and overall work. The first girl I worked with was great, and I've had two other girls come through during my time. It's a little like having my own intern, but only because I have to delegate when I'm the senior intern there.
Speaking of "The Devil Wears Prada," Vogue magazine happens to be under Conde Nast (our publisher) as well, so I had two Anna sightings in the elevator (that's Anna Wintour, editor-in-chief of Vogue, for those of you who don't know or care). Little things like that are what got the interns, like myself, excited - that, and, well, male models. Casting in any department of the magazine is a beautiful thing. I don't care what anyone thinks because it always made our days brighter.
