"Sustainable" and "reusable" are words often heard these days, and are also the words behind the life devotion of Nathan Jones.
Jones, a junior majoring in natural resources with a specialization in social justice and the environment, was recently chosen to be featured on the debut episode of "Cause Effect," a 4-part mini-series put on by MTVu.
MTVu is the largest television network made specifically for college students and consists of student-produced series and music videos dealing with all aspects of college life.
Jones was chosen because of his life's achievements and dedication to saving the environment, inspired by his care for people.
According to Jones he is an "enviro-humanitarian."
"Everything we do every day is important and we can make a difference," he said.
This self-proclaimed "enviro-humanitarian" stresses that sustainability practices are for the health of people, not merely for the health of the environment.
"My life is dedicated to something bigger than me," he said.
Jones was chosen by the "Cause Effect" series because of his involvement in two prominent sustainability clubs, the Sierra Student Coalition and the Cascade Climate Network.
The Sierra Student Coalition is an student run, national club that hosts student environment leadership training each summer.
The Cascade Climate Network is a northwest based group that promotes student involvement in the political aspects of sustainability.
In addition, Jones is also involved with OSU's Student Sustainability Initiative and the Oregon Department of Energy's Oregon Renewable Energy Action Plan.
Jones also works for OSU's Student Sustainability Center, which has been recently renovated using sustainable resources and serves as a model of sustainable living as well as a meeting place, similar to that of cultural centers on campus.
Last year, students approved a student-funded energy fee that allowed OSU campus to use 100 percent renewable energy, supporting both groups. This change makes OSU stand out nationally as one of the few universities to use 100 percent reusable energy.
While at Portland Community College, Jones championed an effort to have the campus shuttle system use sustainable fuel.
Jones' many efforts for a more sustainable campus and world are not out of guilt, but rather, out of hope.
"[I] know what a better future could be," he said.
Along with being chosen for "Cause Effect," Jones was a video jockey for the Good Woody Awards - an MTVu award show for socially conscious music groups.

MTVu is broadcast on more than 750 college campuses nationwide. Also, it is the first television network to air the entirety of its content online at www.MTVu.com.
