Sophomore pitcher Stefanie Draper pitched the first complete game shutout for the Beavers this spring as the Oregon State softball team defeated Portland State 4-0 on Wednesday afternoon in the team's home opener at the OSU Softball Complex.
Draper improves her record to 5-1 on the season, allowing only three hits in the game. She added three assists and two strikeouts.
"We came out and played very intense and focused," Oregon State head coach Kirk Walker said. "Draper threw a great ball game. I felt great about our warm-up, and we gave a great team effort and had great team energy. We had good offensive production, and we had good at-bats - even if we didn't get a hit, we still had good at-bats. The top of the order did a nice job as well."
Freshman McKenna Lowe extended her hitting streak to 10 games, leading off the first inning with a single to the left side before scoring on junior DeAnn Young's RBI single to put Oregon State on the board first.
After a scoreless second inning, the Beavers tallied a pair of runs in the bottom of the third on junior Stefanie Ewing's two-RBI double to right center, scoring senior Cambria Miranda and Young, who reached on a fielder's choice to put the team up 3-0 after three full innings.
Starting the fifth at the top of the order, Lowe drew a walk after starting off with an 0-2 count before advancing to second on sophomore Dani Chisholm's single to left field for the fourth hit of the game. But a double play left the team scoreless with a runner left on second as the game headed into the sixth inning still up 3-0.
On defense in the top of the sixth, the Beavers shut down Portland State in a quick three up, three down on groundouts, including a tough stab at shortstop by junior Paige Lowe and a diving stop at second base by Miranda.
Ewing earned her second hit of the game on a single up the middle to start off the bottom of the inning with sophomore Tarah Black entering as a pinch runner and advancing to second on freshman Audrey Roderfeld's sacrifice bunt before scoring on freshman Erin Guzy's first double of the season to left center.
Three more quick groundouts in the top of the seventh secured the win for the Beavers, who held Portland State hitless in the last four innings. Oregon State improves to 5-6 on the season, while Portland State falls to 4-7.
Oregon State heads back to Palm Springs, Calif., for the Palm Springs Softball Classic this weekend. The four-day tournament begins on Thursday, Feb. 21, with Oregon State facing Fordham at 1 p.m. and No. 18 Georgia at 3:30 p.m. on Friday, Feb. 22.
