Junior Sylvia Veal ran the second fastest indoor mile time in Oregon State history, and junior Lorene Young ran the second fastest indoor 3,000-meter time Saturday at the Washington Husky Classic Indoor Invitational at the Dempsey Indoor Facility.
"I feel we accomplished everything we set out to do today," said Oregon State head coach Kelly Sullivan. "It was really nice to get out of Corvallis and get the spikes on and do some competing."
Accompanying Veal and Young were eight other Oregon State women's track members who busted into the school's all-time top 10 lists in three events.
Veal ran to a third-place finish in her mile section with a time of 4 minutes, 58.50 seconds for the second best time at OSU.
Young came in sixth in her section, running the 3,000 in 10:03.01, good for second all-time.
Those who entered OSU's all-time top 10 list in the 3,000-meter include: sophomore Hayely Oveson, finishing eighth (10:06.31), fourth all-time.
Senior Noelle Harer came in at 13th, (10:11.95), sixth all-time, while freshman Hanna Soza-Hodgkinson placed 15th, (10:16.22), seventh all-time; and senior Jean-Marie Peterson in 16th, (10:16.62) ninth all-time.
"Lorene Young and the 3K group ran really well," Sullivan said. "They set a lot of new personal bests and broke into the all-time top 10 lists. I was very pleased with their performances."
The following join Veal in the all-time top 10 list in the mile after the Husky Classic: junior Holly Thomson in sixth, (5:05.54), fourth all-time.
Senior Katie Dye took seventh, (5:07.63), sixth all-time; and freshman Marsha Lampi in eighth, (5:08.54), seventh all-time.
In the 800 meters, freshman Jackie Brown finished in seventh with a time of 2:23.70, good for ninth all-time at OSU.
"Overall I was really pleased with our showing today," Sullivan said. "I really feel we got a lot of out of the meet. A lot of our women are very happy with their performances, and there are a few that weren't as pleased but know now what they need to work on. A bar has kind of been set."
Women's track is back in action Saturday, March 1 at 10 a.m. at the Willamette Open in Salem, an event that featured 18 teams last year from all levels of college.
