New food market will serve healthy, organic options
Issue date: 3/12/08 Section: News
A new fresh foods market on the OSU campus is in the works to open next fall.
The rustic-style store will be located on 26th Street in the parking structure facing Gill Coliseum.
"It's going to be a really cool market," said Richard Turnbull, assistant director of University Housing and Dining Services. Although it is still in the design phase, the market is expected to draw students and guests attending OSU sport events.
It will feature locally grown organic produce, an old-fashioned deli and a sushi bar in addition to hot and cold to-go items.
Construction of the food market has yet to begin because it's costs were higher than originally estimated, said Eric Hansen, associate director of UHDS. The new structure will include several different parts. The market section will be an expansion of the Country Store, where students will be able to purchase food using their university meal plans, Hansen said.
The addition will be similar to West Dining Hall with various dining options, including a New York-style deli.
Another addition to the store will be a sit-down restaurant area. This section of the store will not cater to student meal plans.
The planned construction of the market is an attempt by UHDS to replace Arnold Dining Center.
UHDS has wanted to reconstruct Arnold Dining Center but lacks the space to do so.
The new market will give students another dining option, Turnbull said.
UHDS wants suggestions for store names that will reflect the healthy and wholesome foods it will serve.
The winner of the contest will receive a $25 gift certificate. Students who are interested should submit their suggestions by March 21 to oregonstate.edu/uhds/namethemarket.
