Experiencing the hardship of working on a field, Yesenia Valdez appreciates the deeds accomplished by César Chávez for better rights and working conditions.

"It meant a lot," Valdez said. Valdez is currently the community outreach coordinator at the Centro Cultural César Chávez.

"My parents and I worked in the field picking apples; it's hard."

"Knowing that someone stood up for our rights, that was powerful," Valdez said.

April serves as the month to pay tribute and honor Chávez in his efforts for advocating the civil rights of the labor force.

"It's celebrating a person who did a lot for Latino rights," said Nallely Cabaollero, CCCC office assistant. "It's great that he's being celebrated in such a big way - he did so much for the people and the farm workers."

"It's very important to stand up for the people who are under privileged," Caballero said.

Along with celebrating the work of Chávez, the CCCC is also honoring Dolores Huerta. Isis Ilias said Huerta is also monumental in the movement for workers' rights.

"They dedicated their lives," said Ilias, CCCC external coordinator. "They both were a part of a change for uniting communities to fight for civil rights and to fight for better conditions for those working in the field."

She was the right hand person working along with Chávez. Huerta serves as a role model to Latino women.

"We like to remind people that we honor César Chávez for the movement, but Dolores Huerta was involved in the movement too," Ilias said. "We need to honor her, too."

Events for the César Chávez Tribute Month are hosted by the CCCC. The theme for the tribute is Pasión and Unión: The Struggle of One is the Struggle of All.

"We're trying to host events that capture a variety of audiences and to educate the campus and community," Ilias said. "We're really trying to build a community."
