The Oregon State men's golf team finished in third place at the Cowboy Classic, hosted by the University of Wyoming.

Oregon State's Paul Peterson, playing as an individual, played his best golf of the year. The sophmore finished tied for second with Jason Kang of UCLA. Peterson and Kang both finished with a 7-under par 203, only one stroke behind the leader, Troy Merrit of Boise State.

Merritt took home the individual title.

"It was a great tournament for Paul, and for him to finish second was really exciting," head coach Brian Watts said. "He had a great week of golf and we're looking forward to getting him in the lineup and for him to continue his good play."

The Beavers have had great fortune lately. For the second tournament in a row the Beavers staged a final-round comeback and finished in third place. The team finished 1-under for the tournament and posted the lowest final round score of 277.

"Overall we were disappointed with our finish because we felt like we left a lot of shots out there," Watts said. "It was hard to get birdies because there was only being two par-5s so we had to just keep patient and work our way up.""

Without the longer par fives, it became difficult for the Beavers to climb back into the lead. James Allenby finished tied for fifth place with a 5-under 205 for the tournament. Allenby shot a 3-under 67 in the final round.

Diego Velasquez also shot a 3-under 67 for the final round and finished tied for 16th at 2-under for the tournament.

Alex Williams finished in 31st place shooting a 2-over 212. Tyler Simpson and Vincent Johnson finished 9- and 11-over, respectively.

"We'll work hard this week to get ready for Stanford and conference after that," Watts said.

The next event for the Beavers is the U.S. Intercollegiate in Stanford, Calif., April 19-20.
