The women's track team is back in action this weekend at Western Oregon University for the Western Oregon Twilight. This is a one-day event and will be on Friday.
"This is one of the smallest meets we go to," said Hayley Oveson, a sophomore runner. "We will have a lot of girls running in the same races, but it will ultimately help us."
Even though the meet is smaller, it will not be a walk in the park as the OSU ladies try to reach regional qualifying times.
"We have a lot of girls doing great and looking for those regional qualifying times," Oveson said. "The girls are really working hard and they are trying to gear up for those bigger races."
No one on the track team is looking past the competition on Friday and they will treat it with the same respect as any other meet.
"Western Oregon can put on some good meets," commented junior runner Lorene Young. "A lot of us will be in the same races, so we can push ourselves to win."
The Beavers have done a great job the last couple of weeks at the Willamette Invitational and the University of Washington Preview where multiple runners won their races and many girls improved on their times.
At the Willamette Invitational, senior Lauren Denfeld won the 3,000 meter steeplechase with a time of 10:57.19 and senior Noelle Harer won the 800 meters with a time of 2:14.17. Oveson and Young also had quite a performance at the invitational, putting up running times of 17:05.99 and 17:09.70 for the 5,000 meters, respectively.
"We need to be prepared and win our race and not worry about the times," expressed Young. So far, this strategy has worked for the Beavers and continues to be a common mindset that all the athletes share.
"This is a really exciting time," Oveson continued. "The seniors and everyone else have worked really hard, and all that work is starting to pay off." Indeed it has, as the women's track team continues to improve on their times and win races. The lady Beavs will go into this meet with that same determination to win.
Events start up at 4 p.m. and will continue through the night.
