OSU student Ben Gerling committed suicide early Monday morning, according to Lt. Jeff Lanz, station commander for the Oregon State Police branch on campus. Gerling was a senior in liberal arts.

Corvallis EMS and the Corvallis Police department responded to the call to his off-campus apartment.

Gerling was a member of the Air Force ROTC and the Phi Delta Theta fraternity at OSU. Counseling and Psychological Services is available for students who are finding they are having difficulty dealing with the death, Lanz said.

"Those impacted by his death are encouraged to reach out to friends, family, CAPS and clergy," said Dean of Student Life Jackie Balzer.

The memorial service for Gerling is set for Sunday, May 18, at 2 p.m. at the First Baptist Church.

Dear Ben, you were already a man when you were just a boy. A gentleman and a host, standing in when your folks were not there, and excelling.

You worked at Roths, a bag boy on the track to be CEO, because you cared for people and you gave yourself to help them, not for your own reward. (Continued…)
