The Oregon State women's track team will be back in action this weekend. Some athletes will head to Eugene for the Oregon Twilight at the University of Oregon on Friday. Others will go to Monmouth for the John Knight invitational at Western Oregon University on Saturday.
Last weekend the Beavers had only a few runners go to Pacific University and Stanford while others trained and had time to recuperate before this weekend.
"Last week helped us train for this," senior Lauren Denfeld said. "This is going to be a big week for a lot of reasons."
With the Pac-10 Championships just around the corner, this weekend will help the women match up with some of the best athletes in the nation and obtain their regional qualifying time.
"For some girls this weekend is the last chance to get their regional qualifying time," said junior Holly Thomson. "We had the week off to train and save our energy so we would be ready to run this weekend."
Distance running is about peaking at the right time. A runner's physical peak is as much about training as it is racing. Runners can peak physically but not mentally and vice-versa. The key is doing both at the same time. It's a feat that can be accomplished by running competitive races late in the season.
"The Oregon Twilight is a great meet," Denfeld said. "It will be a great precursor to the Pac-10 Championships."
The Pac-10 Championships feature great runners from around the conference that are also ranked nationally. Even with the Pac-10 Championships coming up, the women's track team is not overlooking this weekend despite that the workout intensity has subsided.
"Our workouts were toned down this week to help save our energy for this weekend," Thomson said.
"This week is going to challenge some girls," Denfeld said. "Western Oregon is going to offer the 10,000 meters; some of the girls have not ran that race in awhile."
The women's track team is going into this weekend with the same determination that they have demonstrated all season long. Even with the Pac-10 Championships closing on them, the ladies of the track team are still going full board.
"This week is going to help prepare and build confidence going into the Pac-10 Championships," Denfeld said.
The Oregon Twilight will begin at 4 p.m. Friday, and the John Knight Invitational will begin Saturday at 10 a.m.
