Our boy Roy

"And with the 157th pick in the 2008 NFL draft, the St. Louis Rams select: Roy Schuening, offensive guard, Oregon State University."
"Finally," is all I had to say when the Rams called Schuening's name at the NFL draft three weeks ago. Some experts had Schuening ranked as high as the third offensive guard in the draft, and we should've heard his name called on the first day. However, certain NFL organizations didn't share those feelings as guard after guard with less and less experience kept coming off the board as "Our Boy Roy" still sat at home, waiting.
For the sake of argument, let's take a more in-depth look at some of the offensive guards taken before Schuening.
Forty-seven picks before Schuening's name was called, the Miami Dolphins selected offensive guard Shawn Murphy of the Utah State Aggies. Murphy had a year or so of starting experience at Utah State - a team good enough for seventh in the Western Athletic Conference. The Aggies went 2-10 on the season and had an offensive line that led the way for their leading rusher with 504 yards! That's 64 yards less than James Rodgers - and he's not even a running back!
Another guard picked over Schuening was Chad Rinehart, out of Division-I-AA University of Northern Iowa. Rinehart was selected 96th overall by the Washington Redskins, a team with its fair share of needs along the offensive line. I sure hope for their sake that Rinehart was the player they were looking for, but how could he not be? Didn't you see his performance against Youngstown State?!
Now back to Roy, whose career yards gained on the ground give him 3,862 reasons why he should've been the first guard taken in this draft.
Schuening was a starter in three Division-I bowl victories against New Mexico, Missouri and Maryland. In the regular season, he was on the field for victories against nationally-ranked opponents such as Hawaii, Cal and the Trojans of USC (they're pretty good right)?
Notice how Youngstown State was not one of the notable victories in Roy Schuening's career.
