It has been an exciting year for the Oregon State women's track team, but as the season draws to a close, the team has many reasons to look for promise in the season to come.
"Everyone is doing great," said sophomore Hayley Oveson. "This has been a season where everyone has had big PRs and a lot of people are moving to the next level in their abilities."
This season has proved to be a highlight for the ladies with a number of runners hitting the record books.
Senior Lauren Denfeld holds the school record in the 3000 meter steeplechase, while junior Sylvia Veal is second all-time in the 1,500 meter.
Junior Lorene Young holds top ten spots in three different events: ninth all-time in the 3,000 meters, fourth all-time in the 5K and third all-time in the 10K, if she had not run unattached in the events.
Sophomore Hayley Oveson holds top ten spots in two events: tenth in the 3,000 meters and third in the 5K, if she had not run unattached.
Senior Nichole Crawford also holds a top ten spot in two events: the 10K, where she is fourth all-time, and the 5K, in which she holds the tenth all-time spot.
Other ladies in the top ten in their respective events are senior Jean-Marie Peterson who is fourth all-time in the 1,500 meters and junior Holly Thompson who has the sixth all-time spot in the 1,500 meters. Sophomore Krista Stangel is eighth all-time in the 3,000 meters. In the 5K, sophomore Abby Chesimet and freshman Hannah Soza-Hodgkinson are sixth and eighth respectively. In the 10K, senior Rebecca Mishler obtained eighth all-time.
"The freshmen are doing great," commented Oveson. "We will be excited for next season."
For some ladies on the team the year starts back up in the fall with either training or cross country and for others the season starts right away during the summer.
"We are sad that the seniors are leaving," continued Oveson. "They left behind a great example."
With runners such as Chesimet, Oveson, Thompson, Veal and Young returning for next season, the women's track team will look forward to next season.
This has been a great season, and the ladies will hope to return next year with the same determination they have had all season.
