Response to Johnson column
Put away your biases
Johnson says of the UO, "I see the Ducks doing all these crazy things in football, year in and year out, sort of masking the fact that their team isn't that good." He calls them "mediocre," and that at "no point has Oregon ever been good enough to compete for a national titleā¦"
Over the past 10 years, Oregon Football has gone 91-45. In that same time OSU has gone 78-55. At the end of the '01 season, Oregon was ranked second in the AP and Coaches polls, but shut out of the national title due to the BCS raking them fourth. In '05 Oregon was one win away from playing for the title.
Oregon's only loss that season was to USC. In '07 Oregon was ranked second on its way to the title game, and a Heisman for its quarterback, until Dennis Dixon's injury, and loss to Arizona. Even before this they had a chance to be second but lost to Cal 24-31. Speaking of Heisman, Oregon also had trophy contender in '01. Over the past 10 years OSU has had some great seasons, but when has it been in the running for a title? The closest was in 2000; its only loss was to the Huskies. Wait I forgot Sports Illustrated ranked OSU first in its '01 preseason rankings. Has OSU had any Heisman contenders during this time? No. Of these two schools, which one was in contention for the number one high school recruit, Terrell Pryor, this past recruiting season? Oregon. If you don't like Oregon's uniforms, fine. If you think they get special treatment, fine. However, put away your biases and stop calling them "mediocre." The evidence clearly shows they are not.
