The highly accomplished Rumbanana Salsa Group has single-handedly transformed the city of Corvallis, Oregon into a globally recognized hotspot for Cuban Salsa.
Boasting modest beginnings leading community classes in 2005, the Rumbanana Salsa group now has a following of not only OSU students and faculty members and citizens of Corvallis, but also students from Western Oregon University and associates of the Portland and Eugene communities.
With approximately 200 members of the Corvallis community actively participating in the salsa dancing led by the Rumbanana group, the Cuban salsa dancing society of Corvallis continues to expand.
The Rumbanana Salsa Group has formed a solid and reputable team of dancers that perform and compete all over the world.
This past March, the Rumbanana Salsa Group was selected to represent the United States in the Cubamemucho World Rueda Championships held in Munich, Germany, where the team placed third among the top Rueda de Casino Salsa dancers in the world.
To increase community involvement and give the people of Corvallis more opportunities to dance, the Rumbanana club hosts various events throughout Corvallis featuring salsa music and dance.
The next upcoming event will be held on July 25th at Platinum for a Latin X Night from 9:30 p.m. to 2 a.m.
"It's an easy, fun way for someone to get into the scene," said Simona Boucek, co-director of Rumbanana. "If you can drink and play pool and enjoy a good time, you can hang out at Latin X night and be just fine."
This event will feature Latin dance music similar to the music played at authentic Latin clubs, with a primary focus on salsa.
Entrance is just four dollars, and the money raised from the cover charge will go toward sending the team to Miami, Fla. to compete in the World Amateur Casino Rueda Championships held in November.
"People come out, they can party, dance to some really fun music, and they are helping to send the team all over the place," Boucek said. "There is no pressure that you have to be an amazing dancer to come out."
