The Office of Admissions actively recruits in 12 Western states. These states are targeted based on the results of historical enrollment patterns from the area, high levels of student interest and areas in which the college bound population is growing, Ortega said.
"I went to the OUS Tour when I was in high school," said Janey-Rae Collins, a senior in animal sciences. "They dedicated a whole day to the event. Different speakers came and gave us a lot of information."
"I also attended the visit days before deciding to enroll at OSU. For me, this was more effective," Collins said. "It gives you a better feel for the campus and what you'll be living in for four years."
Ortega said there are several different approaches to recruiting students from Oregon and out of state.
Students are reached by visiting the individual high schools, such as the OUS Tour, visits to community colleges and by participating in regional and national college fairs," she said.
According to Ortega, retaining students and providing them with a positive experience is the most effective recruitment tool OSU has.
"After students arrive on campus, they become 'recruiters' for Oregon State whether they know it or not. Each experience they have or interaction they share may affect enrollment," Ortega said.
"I encourage students to get involved by representing their college as an ambassador, working as a campus tour guide, serving as a START leader or just being a friendly face when they see the groups of campus visitors we host each day."
