For Diana Chen, a first-year pharmacy student, this is her fifth term (one must re-apply each term) applying for the MealBux program. Last term she had been turned down but still thought highly of the program.

"I used to use it at North Shore Smoothies; you can use it on campus, too," Chen said. "I think it's awesome. It helps out college students who need money for food."

While the program is always growing in popularity Garcia explains that although it is not very well funded, they can at least give something to struggling college students

Last year, ASOSU was able to give money to 200 students. This year's numbers will differ, though, as the budget has changed and each student receives a different amount of money.

The system works in such a way that if the first 100 people are in need of the full $250 limit, then only 100 people will receive money for food. This term's budget is $27,000 dollars.

"More funding is a big deal for us right now. Currently we only have funding from student fees, but we are seeking extra funding from student health fees and grants," Garcia said.

"The reason this is such a great program is because it helps students make ends meet," Madrigal said. "It allows students to use money on other things and even assists some in supporting their children."
