State Rep. Sara Gelser hosted a town hall meeting Thursday evening at the Venetian Theater in downtown Albany.
The focus points of the meeting were employment and the economy. Gelser outlined her plans to raise Oregon out of its economic recession, and she invited community members to voice their own ideas.
The meeting was co-hosted by state Rep. Andy Olson and state Sen. Frank Morse. Both Republicans from Albany, their ideas have often differed from those of Gelser in the past.
Last night was an effort to emphasize the need for bipartisan solutions to Oregon's economic issues. Gelser's collaboration with Olson and Morse demonstrated her commitment to this goal.
"The legislature must seek bipartisan solutions that provide solid economic opportunities and needed assistance to Oregon families. I'm delighted to co-host a town hall about this issue with my colleagues, Representative Olson and Senator Morse," Gelser said.
Gelser's main agenda for the 2009 legislative session will include making health care more affordable to all Oregonians.
Gelser hopes that burdens will be lifted not only from individual families, but from small businesses throughout the community as well. The success of such small businesses, she said, is the key to rising out of the current economic recession.
"That's really a goal that I have: to make health care insurance affordable to everybody," Olson said.
Although Oregon has consistently been percentages ahead of the rest of the country in unemployment rates, Paul Warner, legislative revenue officer and Oregon State economist, predicts that Oregon will begin to see significant economic growth in the long run.
Gelser will be sworn in for her second term in office on Jan. 12.
Along with serving on the Revenue Committee and the Rules Committee, she will also be the chair of the House Education Committee for the 2009 session. She will also serve as the assistant majority leader of the Oregon House.
Gelser will host an additional event on Saturday, Jan. 10 at 10 a.m. at Grace Lutheran Church in Corvallis, during which she will present an overview of the 2009 legislative session as well as hold an open community discussion.
