The Calendar of Hope, an 18-month calendar featuring Oregon State students, staff and faculty, is currently on sale at the Women's Center.

Each woman featured completes the phrase, "When violence against women and children ends, I will..." The calendar also contains thoughtful and amusing anecdotes from the models.

Samantha Reining, a senior in history, used the idea for the calendar for a women studies internship project for the Women's Center.

"I wanted to work on this project because I feel that the issue of violence against women is extremely important," Reining said.

The purpose of the Calendar of Hope is to raise awareness about the serious problems surrounding the issues of violence against women and children. Reining said she hopes this is another step toward ending these problems.

The Calendar of Hope can be purchased at the Women's Center for $15 each.

Proceeds from the calendar will go entirely toward the education of sexual violence at Oregon State.

Beth Rietveld, director of the Women's Center, said she had been envisioning this project for quite a while.

Rietveld got the idea from a calendar that the University of Connecticut Women's Center produced.

"I'm really thrilled with our final product and we can all be proud," Rietveld said. "It was a very fun project. Watching how much fun everyone had at the photo shoot and seeing how excited everyone was to be there made the final calendar worth it.

Violence against women and children is a serious and prevalent problem in the world and local community, Rietveld said.

The local Center Against Rape and Domestic Violence (CARDV), which serves both Benton and Linn counties, receives more than 4,140 phone calls each year on the 24-hour hotline.

"The experience of working on the calendar was very rewarding," Reining said. "It is especially exciting to realize that something as simple as a calendar can have a big impact on women's lives."

I am glad that this calendar is raising awareness and money for women in need. However, Beth Rietveld's idea is exactly like the one from the University of Connecticut, down to the exact same phrase. (Continued…)

Feminists have to be the most darling of all. Making calendars will definitely raise awareness (feminists favorite activity) and help bring an end to violence against women. (Continued…)
