Hypoxia occurs when a certain area in the ocean does not have sufficient oxygen levels to support the marine life. When hypoxia occurs, animals that get caught in the "dead zones" suffocate and die.

The scientists believe that hypoxia is closely related to shifting wind patterns and changing ocean conditions and have found that it mostly occurs during the summer months.

Lubchenco has served as president of the International Council for Science and president for the American Association for the Advancement of Science, as well as for the Ecological Society of America.

Lubchenco founded the Aldo Leopold Leadership Program that teaches environmental scientists how to be leaders and communicators of scientific information to the general public and policy makers. She is currently chair of the Advisory Board.

She has received numerous awards throughout her career, including a MacArthur Fellowship, a Pew Fellowship, nine honorary doctoral degrees, the 2003 Nierenberg Prize for Science in the Public Interest, the 2004 Distinguished Scientist Award from the American Institute of Biological Sciences, and the 2009 Edward O. Wilson Biodiversity Technology Pioneer Award.

Along with Dr. Lubchenco, Dr. John Holdren, a professor at Harvard University, was selected to serve as Assistant to the President for Science and Technology and Director of the White House Office of Science and Technology Policy.

Dr. Varmus, who has won the Nobel Prize for his research on the causes of cancer, will serve as Co-Chair of the President's Council of Advisors on Science and Technology with Dr. Lander; Lander is the Founding Director of the Broad Institute at MIT and Harvard.
