An OSU student died over winter break on Saturday, Dec. 27, 2008 in a car crash that left four other people injured near Seal Rock, Ore.
Gayatri Shrivastava was a 25-year-old graduate student from Indore, India, studying chemistry with a focus in nanomaterial synthesis.
She and three passengers were heading north on Highway 101 when the wheels of their Toyota Camry slipped off the road around a particularly sharp curve.
The driver overcorrected, accidentally steering the car into the lane of oncoming traffic.
The Camry first hit a guardrail and then was struck by a van on the other side of the road.
The crash occurred at around 7:15 p.m. All five victims of the crash were taken directly to Newport Hospital, where Shrivastava died shortly after.
The three passengers of the Camry survived, sustaining moderate to critical injuries, but were all released on Sunday morning.
The driver of the van, a 52-year-old man from Battle Ground, Wash., was also treated at Newport Hospital and released.
There will be a memorial hosted by the OSU chapter of the India Students Association held in her honor today at 6 p.m. in MU 109 to commemorate her life.
