OSU is in the process of renewing their NCAA certification and is looking for public and school input for the renewal process.
The renewal began in Aug. 2008, and after several steps as laid out by the NCAA, will end with a decision in Feb. 2010.
All NCAA Division 1 schools are required to go through a recertification process every 10 years.
Rich Holdren, chair of OSU's NCAA Certification Committee, said that the renewal process is a way for schools to "see where they stand" with their athletic program.
"Our athletic programs are really geared for drawing the public into the university," Holdren said.
The certification committee is made up of three subcommittees, each investigating gender equity, diversity and student well-being, governance and compliance and academic integrity.
Though athletic department personnel cannot lead any committees, there are a variety of people found in the overall group.
"We have faculty, we have staff, we have athletic department people," Holdren said.
Anthony Wilcox, chair of the governance and compliance subcommittee, will be researching athletics operations and connections between university administration, such as the president's office, budget office and athletics.
"We'll be preparing to interview the president and the athletic director on issues relating to this as part of our information gathering," Wilcox said as an example of the role of his subcommittee.
"It really is about institutional oversight of athletics."
The steering committee includes OSU President Ed Ray and Athletic Director Bob De Carolis.
"President Ray has been very involved in this," Holdren said. "He has been wonderfully helpful."
Input from student athletes, coaches, trainers, athletic and university administration, faculty, department advisors and representatives from the state board of higher education will be found throughout the investigation by the subcommittees.
