It's official: Head Oregon State football coach Mike Riley is here to stay, at least through 2015.
Oregon State University Director of Athletics Bob De Carolis announced Dec. 29 that Riley agreed to a one-year contract extension that will extend through 2015.
It's been another successful season for Riley and the Beavers. Finishing up the 2008 season with a 7-2 conference record, including a win versus USC at Reser Stadium, Oregon State ended up 18th in the final Associated Press top-25 poll. Riley secures his position yet again with outstanding results.
His six-year contract has rolled over for every bowl appearance, and the new contract is set for seven more years as well as roll-over for bowl appearances. Including incentives, Riley will bring home a salary of around $1 million in the 2008 season.
"This is a recognition of how much Coach Riley has done for not only the football program, but the University overall," De Carolis told osubeavers.com. "We have a lot of confidence in coach Riley to lead us for future seasons."
The 55 year-old Riley, though born in Idaho, calls himself a Corvallis native and attended Corvallis High School. He first started coaching Beaver football in 1997, but left after the 1998 season for an opportunity to coach one of the National Football League's San Diego Chargers. He spent four years in the NFL (including a year as an assistant coach for the New Orleans Saints), before returning to Oregon State for his second stint as the head coach in 2003.
Since then, Riley has led the Beavers to five straight bowl wins in the Pac-10. He's also the coach with the second-best record (19-8) in the conference over the last two seasons - not to mention he's undefeated in postseason play. In the last eight years at Oregon State, Riley has built a successful, respectable football program.
The fifth bowl game win was this past year's 75th Brut Sun Bowl in El Paso, Texas. The Beavers successfully shut out the Pittsburg Panthers 3-0 and took home yet another post-season win.
Riley is the third-winningest coach in Oregon State football history with 55 victories, not far behind Tommy Prothro (63) and Lon Stiner (74). He's built one of the most successful eras of Beaver football. Adding to his credibility, the Beavers head football coach has also coached current NFL players Steven Jackson, Derek Anderson, Keith Ellison, Dwan Edwards, Tim Euhus, Matt Moore, Sabby Piscitelli, Adam Koets, Mike Hass, Sam Paulescu and Joe Newton.
"There is no question we are on the right track in all facets of the football program," De Carolis told osubeavers.com. "We have enjoyed some of our best seasons ever with Coach Riley at the helm, and he has developed a program that continues to compete at the highest level."
