Another signing day has come and gone in college football, and Mike Riley and the Oregon State Beavers pulled in yet another class filled with talent and upside.
"We, like everybody else in America, think we have a great class," Riley said. "But we are particularly excited about this, it's a versatile class that hits pretty much all the positions."
Versatile is one way of describing the new Beaver football players, as at least five members of the class don't even have their final positions determined yet. One of those five is Vancouver, Wash. native Kyrell Hudson, a top 100-ranked player who was also a highly recruited baseball player. This is a player that Oregon State fans will get to see showcase his talents on the football field as well as the ball diamond in Corvallis.
"Kyrell Hudson is a phenomenal athlete," Riley said. "I'm very pleased that Pat Casey and I and our staffs worked together in the recruiting of Kyrell and I'm very pleased that he signed with the Beavers."
Another name that should sound familiar among Beaver fans is the wide receiver out of Southern California, Reggie Dunn. Dunn, who signed with the Beavers out of high school, was academically ineligible and detoured to Compton Community College, but he will be in orange and black for sure next fall and will attempt to try to fill the enormous void left by the great Sammie Stroughter.
"We're very glad to get Reggie back in the fold, we spent a lot of years recruiting Reggie to Oregon State so we're very glad to have him back." Riley said. "He's very capable of being another guy that can run the fly sweep, he's got a lot of versatility as an athlete."
Hudson and Dunn are two of the most well-known athletes that the Beavers were able to sign in 2009. But the most highly touted of all the new Beavers came in the form of Michael Philipp, offensive lineman from San Bernadino, Calif.
Philipp is rated by Rivals.com as the second-best run blocker and the third-best pass blocker of all offensive linemen in the country. A huge signing for the Beavers as Philipp will be player that has the ability to make life 10 times easier for Jacquizz Rodgers and the entire Oregon State backfield.
These are just a few of the names highlighting a successful day for Oregon State football that will create even more momentum as the Beavers head into the spring of 2009 to build upon their near-championship season in 2008.
