In perhaps the most emotion-filled match of the season at Gill Coliseum, the Oregon State Beavers wrestled fiercely but were not able to capitalize on some very close matches, allowing the No. 10 Boise State Broncos to come away with a win at 25-9.
Starting the meet with a loss at 141-pounds, Oregon State found themselves down 3-0. With 149-pound senior Heinrich Barnes taking the mat second, the Pretoria, South Africa native would not be denied his 12th-straight win. The win gave Barnes a perfect sweep of his Pac-10 opponents, keeping his No. 16 ranking intact.
Knowing the Beavers needed points on the board, Barnes was able to win by decision over Boise State's Jason Chamberlain, ranked No. 17, 7-4.
"[This win] is going to help with me getting a good seeding going into the Pac-10s," Barnes said. "Out into the match I just believed in myself, my training and God."
Following Barnes' win, Jon Brascetta was set to face the Broncos' No. 6-ranked 157-pounder Adam Hall. The match ended with a called fall by the official - a call the fans disagreed with. As boos came from the crowd, head coach Jim Zalesky had a word with the official, which ended up getting him a warning. Brascetta ended up losing the match by a pin.
In yet another heated match, junior Keegan Davis stepped up against No. 18-ranked 165-pounder Tyler Sherfey. After falling behind early in the match, Davis got fired up when Sherfey had an aggressive hand to the head.
After backing up, Davis took his own open-handed slap to Sherfey, costing him a point but giving him momentum, pulling the match back from what looked to be a major decision in a very close match. Davis lost by decision at a score of 10-6 at the end of regulation.
"That's what a rival meet is all about," head coach Jim Zalesky said. "[165-pounds] was a great match, but things happen out there, emotions get going and sometimes things like that take over."
The afternoon's closest match came at 174-pounds between Oregon State senior No. 13 Kyle Bressler and Boise State's Nate Lee, ranked No. 12. Going into overtime tied up, both wrestlers were able to get an escape in the fifth and sixth round. Going into the last round, Bressler had a riding time advantage of mere seconds, and starting on the bottom he was not able to get up until Lee had a 13 second advantage. Bressler was desperate for a takedown and had the crowd on their feet in hopes of a win, but Lee was able to last out the final 10 seconds, taking the decision at 4-3.
