The Office of Community and Diversity has created an essay contest to help OSU become a top choice for people interested in attending a diverse university.
The stakes are high because the winnings for this essay contest include an entire academic year's worth of tuition at the in-state, undergraduate rate for currently enrolled OSU students.
"This essay is a good way to express people's different opinions on diversity, it's also a good way to improve on our writing styles," said Kevan Walker, a freshman who is currently undecided.
In order to submit an essay, students must currently be enrolled as a student at OSU. The front page should only have the essay on it and the back page must have the applicant's name, phone number and email address.
The essay must be mailed or hand-delivered to Corrine Gerig in room 330 of Snell Hall by Friday Feb. 27 and no later than 5 p.m. Electronic submissions will not be accepted. Essays must be postmarked by Feb. 27.
"This contest is a wonderful opportunity for students to express how they feel about diversity at OSU," said Octavia Kelby, a freshman who is currently undecided.
The essay must be one page in length and about how to make OSU a destination of choice for people who are committed to diversity on campus. It should be 12 point font in Times New Roman. The margins should be no smaller than .5 inches. Students can only submit one essay.
"This diversity essay makes people think about what makes a diverse community. It's a worthwhile essay to write. I think if we write it, it helps spread diversity awareness," said Martha Ngo, a freshman in pre-nursing.
Each essay will be judged on content, style and grammar. The essays will get an independent review from a committee consisting of university faculty and staff. The essays will get narrowed down to three to 10 finalists, and the essays will be available for viewing by everyone on campus as well as anyone who has an ONID account. They will be able to vote once on the essay of their choice and the winning essay will be announced in the spring quarter of 2009.
"This is an opportunity for students to give us their ideas about how to make OSU a destination of choice for people committed to diversity. It means that we value their voices," said Terryl Ross, director in the Office of Community and Diversity. "If OSU is to get to the next level of diversity planning, we really need to be more focused and effective. This essay contest will give us lots of ideas about where to go from here."
